Most of us have been socialized to believe it is not polite to discuss issues of diversity, equity and inclusion. We anticipate that these conversations will be “hard” and therefore avoided at all costs. Consequently, we rarely have opportunities to discuss these issues in a thoughtful and comprehensive way. This workshop creates an intentional, judgement-free space to have an initial conversation. Participants will discuss the difference between diversity, equity, and inclusion. The former does not necessarily lead to the latter. This is a level-setting dialogue pertaining to equity-related vocabulary and concepts.
Objectives:
- Establish level-setting vocabulary regarding oppression, race, and racism
- Recognize why racial equity, diversity, and inclusion is important in today’s society and what we might be able to do
- Learn and share your thoughts on race, diversity, equity, and inclusion with others
